13 Helpful Tips For Latchkey Kids
· Walk with friends straight home from school—don’t delay. · Don’t go into the house if something seems wrong, like an open door or broken window. · Keep ALL doors locked. · Don’t answer to door to strangers. Or, simply, don’t answer the door at all. · Never tell anyone you are home alone. Say that your mother can’t come to the phone and take a message. Or, let the answering machine take all the calls. · Know your fire escape plan. · Know emergency phone numbers. Keep them near the phone. · Remember your phone number, address and cross streets. · Go over basic first aid with your parents. Know where the first aid kit is kept. · Know where to go if you lose your house key—a trusted neighbor’s house, perhaps. · Put an extra key, money and list of phone numbers in backpack. · Ask your parents what to do if the power goes out. · Eat healthy snacks that do not require heating up. This short list is just a beginning. Add more tips that apply to your family. Practice and review often!
