Some activities to help make a snow day fun

This time of the year, kids watch the news intently. They hang on the weatherman’s every word, because sometimes, he says something magical, such as “For a list of school closings, see the list on your screen.”

And there it is. The most important school district of all, scrolling by on the list. Just to be sure and to replay the giddiness of the moment, they wait for it to scroll by again.

As many parents know, a kid who won’t budge out of bed on a school day suddenly becomes a morning person on a snow day, ready for a winter party. What’s a parent to do?

Though there are millions of things which should get done, snow days are rare and should be cherished. For every dish washed or closet cleaned, a family memory is being sacrificed.

Here are some ideas of how to appreciate a snow day:

Of course, play in the snow
Build a snow man or snow family

With some sand buckets or other mold, build a snow fort

Shovel snow (remember to help some elderly neighbors)

Have a snowball battle

Frolic with the dog in the snow

Get cozy inside
Make some hot chocolate

Play a board game

Put a puzzle together

Bake cookies

Make some soup

Call a relative

Dance to some music

Have a tea party

Snuggle and read a story

Get creative
Make friendship bracelets

Create a large paper chain out of construction paper strips

Decorate the house with hanging snowflakes

Make bird seed pinecones

Get out all the instruments in the house and have a concert

If it’s Christmastime:
Sing Christmas carols

Wrap presents

Write Christmas cards

Write a letter to Santa

Decorate the tree

Check out this site from a kindergarten teacher. There are tons of ideas here to keep little ones busy—using a snow theme.

A snow day is a gift. Enjoy it before it melts away!

A day off for snow can be a fun day. Sledding, building snowmen, and having a snowball fight are just the start of fun things to do on a snow day.
