Summer Learning

The thoughts of kids at home during the summer make my head swirl. It swirls in a good way, and it swirls in a bad way. I get giddy thinking of all the fun stuff we will be able to do but recall summers when everyone was just getting on each other’s nerves.

This summer, I will try something different. Instead of hearing “I’m boooored,” we will plan activities that cultivate our individual interests.

During the school year, the kids need to focus on academics. So, during the summer months, they can pursue their particular interests. I have recently learned that my daughter has an interest in architecture—St. Louis is a great place to explore that! Both my sons are showing interests in music. If a video camera is available, a budding film maker can produce his own movies!

Since I am not a wealth of knowledge about much of anything, we will have to rely on outside help (that is free or low-cost). Instead of sending everyone away to a summer program, I would rather spend time with my kids. We will all learn a lot!

The library is a great source of videos as well as books. www.win.org/library Search by subject. The library hosts a lot of activities during the summer. You don’t have to attend your local branch only…visit them all!

The Art Museum is free and provides air-conditioning during a summer day. One can find art, of course, but also artifacts, antique furniture and even mummies! Website:

The St. Louis Zoo is free and always a treat! www.stlzoo.org

www.Stlouisarch.com –The arch houses a very interesting museum. Check it out!

www.marktwainmuseum.org –Visiting Hannibal makes a great day-trip.

Summer concerts happen often in our community! Pull up a lawn chair and enjoy! Check the newspapers.

The Missouri Extension Service www.outreach.missouri.edu/stcharles provides information about gardening and taking care of animals.

The Science Center offers free admittance. There is an abundance of hands-on stations. Everyone is sure to be worn out from this trip! www.slsc.org

Since we are blessed with many hours during the summer to pursue our own interests, we need to include serving others. We could take home-made goodies to a lonely neighbor, volunteer at the local animal shelter or assist a new mother. It’s not all about “me,” and that is a great lesson, too!

Happy Summer!
