Summer Activites
About this time of year, while living in a small farming town in Illinois, I walked to school to register my child. Everyone had their windows open, and I was pelted with overheard bits of “conversations” such as, “How many times have I told you to…;” “Stop hitting your sister;” and a recurring…”Go outside and play!”
This time of summer, kids and parents can get edgy. Normal summer activities are not working any magic—and many families need something to do! Here are some ideas.
Normal activities: Sprinkler Play-Do Painting Sidewalk Chalk Pool Park
If those aren’t doing the trick, how about: Map reading--any map…kids are fascinated Invite a special cousin or friend to sleep over Draft a family tree Read a big chapter book (A parent reads one chapter per night) Cook—with supervision Cross-stitch or sew—with supervision Prepare Christmas crafts now Learn an instrument Have a picnic Mail letters and artwork to far-away relatives Take photographs Practice hand-writing and math for upcoming school year Dance Wash the car Camp in the back yard Star gaze Library activities—there are lots! Library trips for books and videos Bake some goodies and take to a nursing home—call first
For older kids: Learn how to change oil in the car Take a babysitting class (offered by the city or hospital) Mow grass for an elderly neighbor Learn how to make a webpage Research a topic in-depth (astronomy, photography, dinosaurs, family history) Volunteer at a hospital or animal shelter Reorganize bedroom Master a yummy recipe
School starts soon. Hang in there!
