Basket Garden
Ingredients: Empty basket Heavy plastic bag to fit basket Scissors 3 to 7 plants in small pots* Prop-up material (wood blocks, cans) Mulch (sphagnum moss or finely shredded newspaper)
Put the bag inside the basket and open the bag. Trim off the excess plastic at the top so that the bag fits the basket. Place the potted plants inside the basket. To bring the pots level with the rim, use a prop-up material, such as blocks of wood, cans, stones or broken bricks. Put sphagnum moss or shredded newspaper, as mulch, on top of the basket. This will keep the soil from drying out and will hide the pot rims, bringing your garden together.
*Read the directions for your types of plants to determine where to place your basket garden. Some like sun and some like shade. Try to choose plants that will agree with each other about where they like to live.
Toy Garden
Ingredients: Old toy, such as football helmet, beach pail, doll baby carriage, boat, wagon or lunchbox Lots of colorful plants Potting soil Drainage makers (large pebbles, marbles, plastic foam peanuts)
Make sure that the toy you want to use is OK with everyone in the family. It should be a toy that is about to be thrown out anyway. Ask a parent.
Line the bottom of the toy with drainage makers. Put a little potting soil in the toy. Place the plants in the toy. Fill around the plants with more potting soil. Ideas from:
